Cayman S Sport Setting Pikes Peak Record |
by Pete Olson
There’s a saying: It’s the journey, not the destination… I’d say it’s both.
THE JOURNEY: (8,000 miles, 12 states, 5 weeks). Beginning with a radar “ground speed” check on Hwy 20, west of Burns, then Moab, Utah (105 degrees), The Million Dollar Mile (Colorado narrow two lane with 200 foot cliffs and no guard rails), ride on the Durango – Silverton narrow gauge railroad, Pikes Peak (hill climb record for a white Cayman S Sport with Oregon plates), Rocky Mountain National Park, Mt. Rushmore (overnight hail storm, there’s a reason they are called hail stones), Black Hills, Badlands National Park, the old farmstead in Eastern South Dakota (mostly demolished), St Paul, Minnesota (3 hours of night time wind, lightning & thunder, with tornado watch sirens wailing), Michigan Upper Peninsula (dodging deer, moose & fox), then down across the Mackinaw Bridge to Traverse City.
THE DESTINATION: Grand Traverse Resort, 2013 Porsche Parade (a 7 day event) with 868 Porsches registered.
PARADE ACTIVITIES: Take your choice enjoying a variety of the activities: Volunteer activities (PCA is “fueled” by volunteers), Concours, Auto Cross, TSD Rally, Banquets, Driving Tours, Art Show, Goodie Store, Beer & Wine Tasting, 5K walk/run, meeting lots of new friends and seeing friends from the past. And, Saturday , a closing parade of 300 + Porsches through the streets of Traverse City.
Hans-Peter Porsche was there (see photo). There was the first factory “documented” 911 (owned by Jerry Seinfeld) it was # 48, since the first 47 came out of the factory with 901 paperwork. Introduction of the new GT3 (the sound was awesome, as it entered the banquet room!), and several new Porsches to drive on a tire test course.
RETURNING HOME: Michigan Upper Peninsula (watching for animals), Wisconsin (lakes, green rolling hills, beautiful dairy farms), Minnesota (dodging misquotes), High School Class Reunion, Montana (Teddy Roosevelt National Park, Glacier National Park). Home again, to beautiful Central Oregon!
